Rameswaram Island Circumnavigation Challenge - edition 1

Circumnavigation of Rameswaram Island in sea kayaks to initiate community interaction programs on conservation. The 80 km passage is planned over 3 days with over 50 sea kayakers participating on the last leg of the expedition.

To encourage a spirit of adventure amongst ICG personnel and to spread awareness amongst coastal populace on coastal security, sustainable fishing practices and safety at sea, An Indian Coast Guard team will be embarking on a challenging kayaking expedition “Rameswaram Island Circumnavigation Challenge – 2024 (Edition – 1)”  covering 80 Km passage in 03 days. The expedition is being organised by Indian Coast Guard Mandapam in coordination with District Administration, Ramanathapuram and will be powered by Quest Adventure Sports Academy along with Ocean Ambassadors Foundation. 

The ICG Mandapam has undertaken kayaking expeditions earlier, but of a much smaller scale. The current expedition is more challenging and first of its kind. The team comprising of 03 sailors which include an ICG women officer and over 50 sea kayakers will later join the last leg of the expedition. Breaking barriers, they achieve the extraordinary – completing the Rameswaram Circumnavigation in an unprecedented three days, covering 80 km. Their groundbreaking feat is not just about speed but includes a trailblazing community interaction program, harmonising tradition and progress. In a historic first, this blends dedication, resilience, and cultural exchange, leaving an indelible mark on Rameswaram's legacy. A record-breaking journey where every step echoes empowerment and unity, they redefine limits and set a new standard for exploration.

The team has also tied up with Tamil Nadu Fisheries department, Tamil Nadu Forest department and Wildlife Institute of India to achieve the secondary aim of Community Interaction Programme to raise awareness among the fishing community to raise awareness among the fishing community about the importance of not operating fishing boats across the International Maritime Border and avoiding fishing in No Fishing Zones. Additionally, the program also aimed to inform participants about safety measures and the protection of life and property at sea.
